On Saturday the competition leading Shoalhaven Mariners 2nd grade hosted the Berkeley Eagles A side at Ison Park Baseball Field. The Mariners were hoping for an easy win from the Eagles who’d only had one win this season, however two errors in the top of the1st inning coupled with a single and double from the Eagles, put the Eagles 2 runs up.
In reply the Mariners batted through the line-up and scored 8 runs, as eagles pitcher Darren O’Connell struggled to find the strike zone, walking 4. The Eagles defence found it tough going, committing 4 errors, as the Mariners hitters fired up.
Some great pitching from Mariners starter Andrew Provest contained the Eagles for the 2nd and 3rd inning keeping them scoreless.
The bottom of the 2nd inning was another good one for Mariners as 4 hits translated into 2 runs. These runs would be the last of the day for the Mariners as the Eagled outfield took some fantastic catches in the deep in the later innings.
Relief pitcher Brenton McMahon retired the side in order in the 4th inning. While part time closer Dan Kelly joined in on the fun, striking out 2 and holding the Eagles scoreless in the 5th and last inning.
