Third grade Mariners started the weekend on Saturday morning at Cringila in fine style. Batting first against Barbarians Mariners set the tone for the game. James Lee hit deep to left field, sacrificing his out to score Mariners’ third run. Simon Levy scored the only hit for the innings ensuring the three runners on base crossed home plate. Batting through the line up Mariners scored 7 runs. In answer Barbarians were three up three down with Ben Elliott combining with Matt Forster for all three outs – including a great catch by Ben and a double play.
A hit by Andrew Provest positioned Mariners well for the second innings but the team could only add two to the score. In response good fielding by Simon Levy at second resulted in three quick outs for Barbarians.
Simon Levy and Andrew Provest again started the next innings with hits positioning runners to score. Kailey Ehrig scored then it was Matt Forster’s hit that led to a further three Mariners crossing the plate. Barbarians hit to right field and then scored on a wild pitch to open the ledger.
No runs would be scored in the fourth innings by either team. Mariners 13, Barbarians 1.
In a commanding position Mariners went out positively in the final innings. A hit by James Lee started the innings. After five runs over the plate Mariners retired to take on Barbarians one more time. James Lee closed out the game striking out three of the first four batters. Mariners 18, Barbarians 1.
Pitching was shared by Ben Elliott with 12 strikes in 18 pitches for two innings and James Lee with 29 strikes in 48 pitches with 5 strikeouts.
