Third Grade Mariners were the only team playing on Saturday. Travelling to Berkeley to play Barbarians Mariners were hungry for the win. Barbarians started well in the first innings, hitting to left field twice to score the first run of the game. Not to be outdone Degan Beckelmans opened Mariners ledger with a two base hit to left field. Batted around by Andrew Provest he would be the first of seven to cross the plate.
In the second Barbarians were struck out three times by pitcher Lee Lawson without adding to their total. Now confident, Mariners returned to the batters box to score four more runs before being retired when consecutive big hits to centre field were caught.
In the third Barbarians too found the outfield with big hits being caught in centre and right field by James Lee and Tom Box respectively. Mariners responded with hits by Antony Lee and Tom Box advancing runners and bringing in two more runs.
One last chance for Barbarians. Simon took the first out catching a foul ball. With a change of pitcher James Lee had his eyes on the prize. After walking the next batter he struck out the next two. Mariners led 13-1 and did not need to bat again.
Pitching was shared by Lee Lawson with 38 strikes from his 61 pitches and 7 strikeouts for his 3 innings and James Lee with 12 strikes for 23 pitches and 2 strikeouts.
Next week Second and Third Grade are at home at Ison Park on Saturday, games starting at 9am.
